Poseidon

Twice the suspense and twenty times the burned bodies. This is actually a fairly worthy sequel to the Poseidon Adventure. As usual the movie makers know nothing about ships and make stuff up to carry the plotline but that doesn't stop you from being on the edge of your seat the entire time. Once the action starts it never lets up until the very end.

If you saw the original don't let that keep you from seeing this. The only thing carried over from the previous version is the general idea of a ship that tips over and a small band trying to escape. From there it is almost completely different. It was well worth the $2 I spent to see it though I would never buy the DVD when it comes out.

Spoilers under the fold.

P.S. If Celleste is reading. Kurt Russell's head is starting to look weird shaped. Like an ant head in the movie Ants.

One thing that was conspicuous by its absence was the man of God loosing faith because of the seemingly senseless death and bad luck at each turn. I will never forget the angry diatribe by the priest over the rising death toll as he closed a hot steam shutoff valve shortly before he dropped to his death.

This remake tried to replace this spiritual conflict with a more secular remorse which did not work as well. All the token hints at faith revolved around the father being a well meaning but silly prude. The secular approach might have worked better if more time had been available to spend developing the main characters.
