Bush Selects John Roberts for Supreme Court
From my initial research he should be a good choice. The Washington post has some background here. There is plenty of information here to send the democrats ballistic.
"He is a Washington lawyer, a conservative, not an ideologue," said Stuart H. Newberger, a lawyer and self-described liberal Democrat who has argued cases against Roberts.
That includes a brief he wrote for President George H.W. Bush's administration in a 1991 abortion case, in which he observed that "we continue to believe that Roe v. Wade was wrongly decided and should be overruled."That last will insure a bloody confirmation fight. Granted the brief was written on the part of the administration and may not even represent his personal views but it’s still plenty to get the left in an uproar. Only time truly reveals the character of a justice.
Update: Seems the boys at Powerline and the Captain agree that this is an excellent choice.
Update: The Captain has this quote but no attribution so not sure how accurate.
In his defense, Roberts told senators during his 2003 confirmation hearing that he would be guided by legal precedent. "Roe v. Wade is the settled law of the land. ... There is nothing in my personal views that would prevent me from fully and faithfully applying that precedent."Update: That quote was from his senate confirmation for the D.C. appellate court. From that vantage he better say it was settled law as he was required to accept precedent from the higher court. Being on the Supreme Court that particular argument no longer applies as that court sets precedent. Time will tell I guess but it does appear President Bush has tried to make a selection true to those who supported him.
